Meet the Ensemble

Current Members
Adam D. O'Dell (Composer, Piano)

 

Adam D. O’Dell (b.1992) is an American composer, pianist, theorist, and teacher. His classical works seek to combine romanticism with jazz, rock, theatre, and folk styles into music with story-like forms, interplay between tonality and atonality, and a strong connection to visual stimuli.

 

Recent commissions include the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, The Oklahoma State University Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble 135, Just Duet, and the Julien Chamber Choir. His works have been performed across the United States, as well as in the United Kingdom, Czech Republic, Brazil, Germany, and Italy. He has won awards from ABLAZE Records, the Tri-State Wind Symphony, the Philharmonia of Greater Kansas City, Make Music Inc., and the Kennedy Center.

 

O'Dell is pursuing his MM in composition at Bowling Green State University, where he has studied with Christopher Dietz and Mikel Kuehn, and is currently studying with Marilyn Shrude. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from Clarke University in Dubuque, Iowa, where he studied composition with Amy Dunker, and piano with Nancy Lease and Sharon Jensen.

 

O'Dell is an internationally published academic writer, and has given lectures and masterclasses in composition, analysis, and biomusicology across the United States. He is a member of ASCAP and SCI, and is a licensed PARMA artist.

Alex Meaux (Bassoon)

Alex Meaux is in his second year of graduate studies at Bowling Green State University in Bassoon Performance. Originally from a small town in Southeast Texas, he earned his undergraduate Music Education degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. Since beginning his BGSU career in 2014, his involvement in contemporary music endeavors have been substantial. He has participated in the New Music Ensemble, performed for multiple New Music Festivals, and strives to perform new works for the bassoon. His goal is always to bring contemporary music to all audiences regardless of age or background. He is currently teaching privately in the Bowling Green-Toledo area and is proud of his small herd of future bassoonists/trouble makers. In his spare time he enjoys learning new recipes, watching zombie themed movies/television, and surfing the internet for adorable cat pictures.

Lucas Gianini (Clarinet)

Lucas Gianini is a clarinetist currently pursuing his M.M. in Music Performance from Bowling Green State University .  Originally from Brazil and spending his teenage years in South Carolina, Lucas brings a varied background of classical and non-classical genres to his musical performances and teaching.  His primary teachers include Kevin Schempf, Anthony Taylor, and Kelly Burke.  Lucas is an advocate of chamber and contemporary music is a founding member of the Noise to Signal Ensemble.  As a soloist Lucas is on the constant search of new works to perform, particularly new works or works that are less known to wide audiences.

 

Outside of BGSU Lucas has performed with the Lima Symphony orchestra and other ensembles in Northern Ohio.  While at BGSU Lucas has taught the Single Reeds Techniques class currently teaches the Woodwinds Techniques class for undergraduate music education majors.  He also teaches with the Music Plus program at BGSU, which provides lessons for underprivileged students from the Toledo area.

 

Lucas received a B.M. in Music Performance and in Instrumental Music Education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he premiered several works by fellow students for small ensembles.   In 2015 Lucas was invited to perform the Poulenc Sonata for clarinet and piano during the commencement ceremony for UNCG’s School of Music, Theater, and Dance. 

Erin Cameron (Composer, Clarinet)​ 

Erin Cameron is a clarinetist, composer, and new music advocate. She has been heard in performances across the country, including appearances on Toledo’s WGTE radio station and with Ohio’s Noise-to-Signal Ensemble, of which she is a founding member. She is an active educator and has worked with young clarinet players at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in addition to serving as the Graduate Teaching Assistant at Bowling Green State University. Her compositions have been performed in collaboration with the International Contemporary Ensemble and Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble.

 

Cameron is currently pursuing a master’s degree in clarinet performance at Bowling Green State University, where she studies with Kevin Schempf. She received bachelor’s degrees in clarinet performance and music composition from Northwestern University.

Anthony Afful (Oboe)

Anthony Afful is a recent alumnus of Gustavus Adolphus College, currently pursuing a master’s degree in oboe performance at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. He is originally from Minneapolis, MN. An active performer in the Twin Cities area, Anthony regularly performs with the Wildcard oboe trio and regularly at the Grand Central café in St. Paul as part of a jazz combo, doubling on flute and oboe. While pursuing his bachelor’s degree Anthony regularly studied with Sarah Erickson-Lume (Professor of oboe at Gustavus), Mark Seerup (Former 2nd oboe and English Horn of the Minnesota Orchestra), and Merilee Klemp (Professor of oboe at Augsburg College), he now studies with Dr. Nermis Mieses of Bowling Green State University.

Christopher DeLouis (Saxophone)

Saxophonist Christopher DeLouis hails from Connecticut and is an avid soloist, chamber musician and educator. With a passion for all styles of music ranging from traditional to contemporary, he has performed with the University of Rhode Island Symphony Orchestra, at North American Saxophone Alliance Regional Conferences and in multiple recitals. He has also commissioned and premiered new works for the instrument in order to broaden the saxophonists available repertoire and techniques. As a chamber musician he has performed at the United States Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, the Annual New England Saxophone Symposium and with ensembles of all sizes and instrumentation. In hopes to inspire the next generation of saxophonists, he has held private studios in Connecticut, Rhode Island and Ohio and has given clinics and master classes to musicians of all ages. Christopher is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Saxophone Performance at Bowling Green State University where he studies with Distinguished Artist Professor Dr. John Sampen. He holds a Bachelor Degree in both Music Education and Saxophone Performance with Summa Cum Laude honors from the University of Rhode Island where he studied with Dr. Jared Sims.

Suzanne Pergal (Soprano)

Suzanne Pergal is a classically trained soprano with an eclectic body of work ranging from contemporary music to theatrical improvisation. She earned a B.M. in Vocal Performance and French & Linguistics at New York University and has completed performance and writing programs at the New England Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music and the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. Academic and performance highlights include Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, receiving a research grant to study nationalist composers in the Czech Republic and self-producing a programs of Franco-centric popular song. After graduating, Suzanne moved to Boston where she studied with Soprano Elizabeth Printy

(née Knighton) and taught with the French Cultural Center of Boston. 

 

From the studios of Jane Rodgers and currently Myra Merritt, Ms. Pergal has a Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance at Bowling Green State University. While at BGSU, Suzanne has performed numerous new compositions and earned scholarships to travel abroad, working with Paris Conservatoire Professor Elène Golgevit at the Académie internationale d’été de Nice.

Jana Žílová (Oboe)

Jana Žílová is an oboist currently pursuing M.M. in music performance at Bowling Green State University, where she also serves as the Graduate Teaching Assistant for oboe. Originally from the Czech Republic, she earned her B.M. from Grand Valley State University. During her studies at Grand Valley she performed with variety of ensembles including Whirlwinds Woodwind Quintet, New Music Ensemble, and Early Music Ensemble, where she played Baroque Oboe.

She attended several Summer festivals including the Ameropa International Music Festival & Courses in Prague, International Oboe Courses in Ostrava, and the International Summer Academy of the mdw in the Sommering region of Austria where she studied with renowned oboe players such as Gordon Hunt, David Walter or Christian Wetzel. She also participated in several competitions including Concertino Praga, The Fifth Jósef Ciepłucha International Academic Oboe and Bassoon Competition in Łódž, and the Ameropa International Concertante Competition, where she won a second prize.

Her primary teachers include Dr. Marlen Vavříková (Professor of oboe at GVSU), Daniel Stolper (Professor of oboe at Interlochen), Ellen Sherman (Principal of Grand Rapids Symphony) and Dr. Nermis Mieses (Professor at Bowling Green).
